here www.sheffieldweather.net/cumulus/record.htm summer 2018 a brief round up a lot of comparison's have been made between the summer of 1976 and the summer of 2018. summer of 1976 was drier than the summer of 2018, however the period between may and august 2018 was drier than the same period in 1976. the warmest summer here was 1995 and this slipped under the radar somewhat. the record wasn't broken and only just failed but it did beat 1976 and just failed to beat 1995 by 0.1 degree. the period may to august was warmer than both 1976 and 1995 the wet spring made sure the region didn't suffer the intensity of the drought yet the gardens and countryside were very dry but luckily didn't suffer the fires other areas have. june started on warm to very warm note with the warmest nights of the month in the first four days. heavy rain on the 2nd brought most of the months total 18mm out of 25.9mm after that the next highest was 3.6mm on the 16th. night time temperatures cooled down from the 5th going into single figures by the 6th but still above normal. this was one the features of the month and the summer in general a lack of very warm humid nights. the month continues it's main theme of lower 20's or upper teens for the maximum temperatures until the 23rd. then the first hot spell of the summer started with the temperatures above 25c for the next 6 days with the peak temperature's of 28.8c on the 25th. overall the month showed general uniform temperature's without any prolonged hot spells interspersed with some cool spells. the hot spell at the end of the month has night time temperatures close to average rather than warm humid nights. june was very dry with 35.5% of the monthly rainfall. june also sported a a brief windy period from the 14th into the 15th when 47 mph was recorded. at the time papers were saying g the hottest summer since 1976 from the normal suspects. for once they got lucky and got it right. however if you forecast hot summers every year sooner or later you hit lucky. the month sported 12 days without any measurable rain as well. the hot weather from june continued into the first eight days of july. night time temperatures were only slightly above normal during this period keeping the pleasant conditions for sleeping going. it turned "cooler" on the 9th and 10th but temperature's hit 25c again on the 11th and it turned hot once more from the 14th to the 16th. nighttime temperature's continued to be only a couple of degrees above normal. no rain fell from the 1st to the 10th and no measurable rain from the 1st to the 12th. it turned hot again on the 19th and 25th then a more sub stained hot spell from the 22nd to the 27th with the hottest weather of the summer being recorded. 30.3c was the high on the 23rd then 32.2c on the 26th just missing out on the highest ever recorded and 30th degrees on the 27th. a feeble attempt at thundery weather produced a few weak thundery showers on the 26th and 27th but these only produced 3.2mm of rain. the warmest night came on the 24th with 16.7c being the low. however despite the heat only 3 nights exceeded 16c in the whole month. it turned cooler from the 28th with the lowest day time high of 19.6c being recorded on the 28th otherwise it remained warm or very warm until then end of the month. july failed to break the record for heat but still came in 2nd place quite comfortability with an average of 19.3c for the month. rainfall wise it was another dry month with 11.2mm falling on the 29th pushing the final figure up to 25.7mm being 10th driest on record. despite the heat thunder was heard only on two days keeping the recent track record of few storms in recent years continuing. the settled weather continued into august with it being hot on the 2nd, 3rd,6th and 7th. the hottest day was on the 5th with 28.3c being the high just beating the 2nd which hit 28.2c. after that the temperatures never reached such high values although there was plenty of warm weather around and some cool weather as well with the 10th with 17.5c and the 17th with 17.9c. a spell cold weather started from the 23rd until the with temperatures at one point -02c below normal dropped the average temperature values by quite a lot. this pushed the summer iin a close 2nd place behind 1976 as the warmest summer on record. the wettest period of august also came in this period with 11.2mm of rain falling on the 26th the only time in the month that rainfall reached double figures. the 27th saw light showers and the month returned to dry but cool note right through to the end of the monnth. the coldest day and nights were recorded in the last 9 days with a high of only 15.2c being reached on the 26th and a low of 6.5c on the 31st. summer 2018 overall was very warm
